An unpleasant legal, institutional or personal issue has arisen. Frankly, you don’t feel like talking about it to a
reporter like me. But you have to. Be mindful of the fact that the delicate and difficult bad-news interview is
inevitable and requires more preparation than perhaps any other type of interview.
Fully understand what I want and anticipate the questions I am likely to ask. Take advantage of my
uneasiness with the situation while controlling yours. Seize control of the interview and steer it in the
direction you want it to go. Ingratiate yourself to your team, school community and the public by remaining
dignified, diplomatic and as positive as possible.
