Blowing the Whistle on Athletic Bullying, Hazing, and Harassment
January 8, 2025Being an athletic director is a balancing act. You’re not a dictator, but you’re also not everyone’s best friend. Instead, you’re a leader, organizer, motivator, and ally who keeps the program running smoothly.
Leading with Balance: Building Athletic Program Relationships the Right Way
Your role comes with a unique challenge: building strong relationships with coaches, co-workers, parents, and student-athletes, all while maintaining professionalism and healthy boundaries. Although it can be tough, it’s possible to build strong relationships and a strong athletic program simultaneously.
Know Your Role
First, let’s be clear: your relationships in this role are not personal friendships. They should be rooted in the shared goal of making your athletic program the best it can be.
Successful working relationships require that you:
- Create and support an environment where everyone can do their best
- Encourage and support coaches, athletes, and staff
- Celebrate all successes, from a small milestone to a big win
- Be available to offer guidance when needed
- Help others grow and develop new skills
- Maintain boundaries between work and personal life
These guidelines will help you create a culture of respect, support, and teamwork.
Be Authentic
You got this job because of your skills, leadership, and passion for athletics. Your personality, whether outgoing, reserved, or somewhere in between, is part of what makes you a great AD. The key is to be yourself while staying within professional boundaries.
Get to know your staff, coaches, and athletes. Show interest in their lives. Ask them about the big game, the project they’re working on, or their weekend plans. Small gestures go a long way in building trust.
People appreciate genuine sincerity. When you make an effort to connect authentically, you create a culture where people feel valued and supported.
Communicate Well
Great relationships start with great communication, and that takes effort. When people see that you genuinely care about what they have to say, they’ll trust you more. Building that trust is the foundation of a strong relationship.
Listen Actively
Make eye contact, acknowledge what’s being said, and don’t interrupt.
Take Your Time
Don’t respond too quickly—especially in tough conversations.
Prepare When Needed
If a conversation could be difficult, think through your words beforehand.
Use Positive Body Language
A simple nod or smile can make a big difference.
Invest in Strong Relationships
Strong relationships don’t just help you do your job better. They make your athletic program a better place for everyone involved. Invest in them, and they’ll pay off in ways you never expected.
